This week has been fairly uneventful. I had a paper due on Monday, which I wrote in between my 10 and 1 classes. I don't think it was that bad of a paper either. It was on reality and A Clockwork Orange. What a strange book. But being a linguist, I was fascinated by the use of language in the novel. I could have written about that instead, but I chose not too. I thought it would get a little bit long.
I had my last class as a college student yesterday. I would say last DAY of classes, but since I only had one, it didn't really count. It was completely anti-climactic for me. I did all of the William and Mary "traditions" in the spring, when I still had friends here to do them with. Let's see, I guess I'll tell you all a little bit about these traditions. You go around campus toasting all of the academic buildings you've had classes in. Needless to say, there was only one I hadn't has class in, so that was twelve buildings, plus the library. We actually went in the study lounge of the library for that one. So then, after all your alcohol is gone (or not) you head to the Wren building to ring the bell. This has great symbolism for the College. The Wren building is the oldest academic building in the nation which has been in continuous use. I had a couple of classes there, and our sorority has it's initiation there. This building was the original College. Anyway, the ringing of the bell goes back to the Civil War, when they were forced to close the College for those years. The president of the College would ring the bell every day to signify the spirit of the College continuing. So that is why we ring the bell on the last day of classes. To continue the spirit of the College. Anyway, last year, after ringing the bell, I got dragged off to drink some more with my non-sorority (ie. male) friends. I said, "But wait, I'm all out of alcohol." They said, "No problem. You can have ours." Music to my ears. So Greg Norman gave me money for Cokes, and Pete Maricostas gave me some of his Jack Daniels. Ok, so my drink was a little strong. So we toasted some more buildings, then we stumbled (and I do mean stumbled) off to Sigma for Liquid Lunch, another great last day of classes tradition here. Do any other colleges do this? Just curious...Lots of people lots of alcohol. I don't remember much of sitting on the porch that day...Then we were off to the Caf for the traditional post-LL dinner, drunk as shit. All I remember of that (besides the cops) was Greg hitting some girls in the face (accidentally) with the desk top which was in his backpack. He was trying to say it wasn't a paddle, but since he was hitting them with it, they said, yes, it is a paddle. Then we went to The Bar, although I don't remember walking there. Then we went to the early 80's party at Gamma, yet another time-honored tradition here at W&M. What a fun day! So you can see why this last day of classes was not all it was cracked up to be. I didn't go to Liquid Lunch, because I just was not in the mood. I didn't even start drinking until we went to the early 80's party. I tried to get free liquor out of the bartenders at the Bar, but it just didn't work. I did, however, enjoy watching Empire with Jack and Allison. Jack because he is just so damn funny, and Allison, because she's never seen it before. How can you live for 19 years and never see the Star Wars trilogy??? Although I believe she was going to watch them all today, if she ever got out of bed. And I think that Maria was saying she hadn't seen them either, so I suppose it's humanly possible. But I couldn't live without Star Wars.
To get back to my story, we watched the movie, which was great fun. I think I gained a new appreciation for Empire, which I didn't have before. I still like Jedi the best though. Then Michelle came over and we all wandered over to the frats for the 80's party. Wow, it took us 10 minutes to get in. Then I found out that guy working the door used to live with Alex, so he would have just let us in anyway. I was like, I don't have my ID Frank, you can give me whatever mark you want. He's like, Erica, I know you, and gave me the 21 mark. I guess it pays to know people. I'm not sure if he knows that Alex and I are dating though. But with the grapevine that is this campus, I don't see how he couldn't. So we get inside the party and I decide for some bizarre reason that I want Beast. So I got some. It was not that bad, because it was super-cold. So we danced a lot, then we left around 1:30. I was anxious to get home, because I had told Alex I would call him, and I didn't want him to get worried. Luckily, Paul had driven Caitlyn home earlier, so he gave Michelle and I a ride back to the house. We were going to go to Iota to see how their party was, but the place was dead. So Michelle went home, and I came up and called Alex. We talked for a really long time, about 1 1/2 hours. Talking to him makes me miss him. I'm so glad I decided to go visit him next week. I have a week between exams, and I decided to go up to Nova so I could get some work done, since this house is so not conducive to studying. And since the apartment will be empty during the day, I figure I can work all alone. And of course, this means I get to spend time with Alex too. At this point, one of the main reasons I'm getting the hell out of here is so I can get over this whole long distance thing. It really sucks living so far away from your boyfriend. The only odd thing is that we've never had a close-distance relationship, so things will probably be a little strange at first. But things have been good so far, almost better than I could have imagined, so I don't foresee any problems. We're good for each other, and to each other. We can talk about everything, and usually we do. We spend a lot of time talking about the relationship, which may seem odd, but I think we always come out of it for the better, and with a better understanding of where we stand and how we feel. Communication is the key. Very important stuff.
Ok, I thought it would be short, but I rambled. I need to do some studying, and I need to start packing. I also need to eat. Sorry for the stream-of-consciousness message, but hey, these things happen...Next week will be a crazy time. I think we are doing an IRC chat on Friday, so I'm looking forward to that. I think I will still be in Nova, so I'm not sure how it's going to be arranged, but we'll see. Oh, yes, I will be up there, because Alex's company's holiday party is that day. What fun. I'm looking forward to meeting all these people I hear about, and I think they want to meet me too. Ha ha.
I'm almost done. How scary is that?
