Just kidding. I caught Fighting Gravity with Justin, Randy, Dennis, and a couple of our other friends, both of whom are previously unmentioned Beta's. They're primarily friends of Dennis's, but I've had a couple classes with one of them. I don't feel like forcing Dave to come up with names for them, so he lucks out.
Fighting Gravity was pretty solid Friday night. They had plenty of energy but a shitty opening act. Enjoyable, but not doing anything particularly interesting or new. The band was called One Finger Salute and they kept flipping the audience the bird. It was probably the most entertaing part of their set. The bassist was the only musician with any real skill, and the sound was kind of a mesh of 311, Rage Against the Machine, and Cypress Hill. The lyrics were the worst though...favorite song title for the evening was "Bugs are Stupid." I was overwhelmed.
We went to the over twenty-one show, but for a room full of 21 year olds and over, there was a lot of high school age snottiness. I'm not talking about drunken roudiness...that I can tolerate. Its the "we're too fucking cool" attitude combined with the look on their faces like "nothing could possibly be fun enough to make us look like we're enjoying ourselves." I had a couple of run-ins with some people and the whole thing made me kind of sad. Fighting Gravity is a fun band if nothing else. Not terribly deep. Just good stuff to dance to and have a good time to. There just seemes to be an overall lack of joy. Even the audiences here at William and Mary have more energy than that, and that is hideously sad. Oh well...their loss.
I've been trying to bite my tongue about some of the stuff going up on the discussion board. I'm worried that if I respond to Mr. Corleone's comments related to my little brother's relationship with Caitlyn, I'll be taking something that was meant in jest to seriously. After all, Paul isn't worried about, why should I be. But I want to just put up one thing to consider; knowing both of them, I went for a long time feeling that she treated him like shit. Getting to know them both better last semester, I came to realize that there are 2 sides to the situation. Paul is rude and inconsiderate to Caitlyn at times, granted. I refuse to make any judgements on a relationship between two people that I consider my friends. Nevertheless, remember that he isn't the only person who is out of line. He just isn't telling the story.
I ordered a couple of CDs through
the Band Box music store in
Williamsburg. I'm still on my Bill Frisell kick. These will be the 3rd
and 4th discs I've bought by him since New Years. Hear is the cover of
the first one. It is Frisell's trio performing live. Good stuff, if
somewhat...offbeat. They go off on free jazz style stuff pretty
regularly, but it ties together really well.
All right. I gotta get outta here.
I'm gonna be late for class. And
check out the picture above from the movie I was talking about two weeks
ago, "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead." It's of Jimmy the Saint
(Andy Garcia on the right) and Franchise (William Forsythe on the left).
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of Treat Williams as Critical
Bill. Oh well. Maybe next time.
