I guess that the thing that bothers me the most is that, when dealing with any world problem, far too many people want to take an extreme approach. While I think it's safe to say that most of us believe in moderation, those with the voice and the power to affect change are those with extreme, often harmfully off base opinions. Any extreme solution brings with it almost certain side effects that are equally negative to the problem being solved. While these extreme opinions frequently balance out into either a stalemate (resulting in no improvement) or a moderate approach, fixing the problems, the activist mentality of those doing the fixing brings with it a narrow view of the problems. If your only goal is to fix the environment, then the environment will likely get fixed based on your answers. Fuck the rest of the problems and realities of life, but the environment will be in great shape. If you want to curb violent crime and drug abuse and that is the end-all and be-all of your existence, then you may have the right methods to handling the problem. After all, who needs civil liberties or individual rights, right?
I think that I've rambled on about this about as much as I'm going able to. In short, I believe that the worst of the world's problems is a lack of the big picture. And no one who gives a damn enough about any single problem is going to fix it without screwing up something else.
