I just heard a great story over at Paul's Deli. I went to meet one of the Alpha brothers who was back in town and got into a dirty joke telling session with one of his friends. She ended up telling us a story about her most embaressing moment as a 15 year old. Imagine, if you will...a fifteen year old girl and her boyfriend go into a grocery store to buy tampons for her. They get to the check out line, only to have the clerk announce over the loudspeaker "I need a price on Tampax." The response over the loudspeaker was "The kind you put in with your thumb, or the kind you put in with a hammer?" The clerk went back to the mic to repeat "I need a price on TAMPAX!" The response from the person in the back: "Oh! I thought you said THUMBTACKS." Oops.
I spent yet another weekend in northern Virginia with Dana. It was a lot of fun and more necessary for my mental health than I realized when I started the drive up. We went to see "Grosse Pointe Blank" with her roommate. Very cool film. Everyone must go see it. I haven't liked John Cusack that much in a film since "One Crazy Summer." BWAAAHAAAHAA!!!
I had a first time experience on Friday. I have the University Center site listed on my resume, although I'm somewhat vague with regards to the nature of my involvement. Until Friday morning, I had never been asked about it. But during my interview with one potential employer, I found that the gentleman had actually circled it on the resume as a point to ask about. It through me for a loop; I was totally unprepared for anyone to give a damn about that particular activity. So, just in case the interviewer in question is reading this: Hi There...how are you? Please offer me a job. I promise I won't eat much and I'm real clean and tidy.
Too much new music. I spent far too much time and money at Tower Records and Best Buy this weekend. Before I went north, I bought "A Decade of Steely Dan" for the tracks "Peg" and "Kid Charlemagne" (ass kicking bassist Chuck Rainey plays on both songs). Then in NoVa, I bought "The Best of Irakere:" a collection of stuff by the fantastic Cuban jazz/rock/latin music band from prior to the defection of trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and sax player Pacquito D'Rivera. What great stuff. A tighter band then any musician should be so blessed as to be a part of...wow. The I picked up the new Michel Camilo album, "Thru My Eyes." Camilo is outstanding and this is a great showing for a collection of standards. It features work by 3 different bassists (all excellent) and 2 drummers. Last but hardly least, I found the album "Angel Song" by trumpter Kenny Wheeler, saxaphonist Lee Konitz, bassist Dave Holland, and guitarist Bill Frisell. I must give this one a glowing review as well. Okay...enough of my "diarhea of the keyboard." Time for bed.
